Hindustani Classical

Alec Goldfarb is a guitarist and performer of Hindustani classical music who has developed a new approach to the instrument informed by the techniques and aesthetics of the sitar, sarod, and other instrumental and vocal lineages.

His performances unfold through the traditional forms of alap, jor, jhala, and gat, with an emphasis on melodic development, rhythmic imagination, and the subtle inflections of intonation that give each raga its character. His work brings the sustain, articulation, and harmonic possibilities of the electric guitar into conversation with the depth and complexity of Hindustani instrumental music. He has performed at India Habitat Centre, Bangalore International Centre, NMACC, Nesco Center, and the acclaimed baithak Upstairs with Us.

His duo project with raga pianist Utsav Lal is driven by an interest in creating a new experimentalism within Indian classical music, expanding the tradition through new forms of interaction, structure, and harmony.
